Thirty years after the disappearance, Clinton police disclosed a working theory: Angela may have been abducted by someone who mistook her for another woman with the same first name. It is the only motive investigators have publicly attached to the case.

Documented police lead
The letter
A cut-and-paste threatening letter addressed to a narcotics informant was postmarked on 4 April 1991 — the same day Angela disappeared. Police connected it to a possible motive when they disclosed the theory in 2021.
Investigators theorize Angela Hammond may have been mistaken for another woman who shared her first name. No publicly identified person is attached to that theory here.
Clinton police re-publicised the case around its 30th anniversary, with Captain Paul Abbott discussing the theory publicly. Reporting on the appeal referenced an anonymous caller; what that caller knew has never been made public.
Her last documented contact was a call from the Second and Jefferson area.
